NIV as perceived by patients: do you know how to use PROMs?

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are indicators that assess the results of care as perceived by patients themselves. A related concept, PREMs1 refer to patients’ experience of care. These personalized medicine tools have become popular over the past 20 years, both in Anglo-Saxon countries and in France.

The HAS recognizes them, the GAVO2 recommends them

The usefulness of PROMs is recognized by the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS)2, as they “improve shared medical decision-making and communication between patients and their doctors” and “contribute to personalized care.” GAVO2 recommends that pulmonologists familiarize themselves with these tools and “use the French versions of the SRI and S3-NIV questionnaires as PROMs specific to the quality of life of patients using home respiratory equipment.”3

The SRI (Severe Respiratory Insufficiency) questionnaire, a benchmark tool for measuring health-related quality of life in patients with chronic respiratory failure, is validated for patients on home ventilation or long-term oxygen therapy. Its 49 items provide a very accurate profile.

Vestalis Connect simplifies the collection of PROMs

Using the Vestalis Connect4 mobile app, patients can complete certain questionnaires directly, including the S3-NIV. This is a short PROM (11 items) designed for the daily monitoring of patients undergoing non-invasive ventilation (NIV). The S3-NIV measures symptoms, sleep, and side effects: leaks, mask comfort, “too much air,” dryness, and patient-ventilator synchronization. These are valuable indicators for detecting patients at risk of discontinuing treatment and adjusting settings.

Vestalis Connect thus provides healthcare teams with easily accessible data that facilitates decision-making. Professionals can also send patients personalized advice and videos via the app.

Patients feel more involved in their treatment (daily records, questionnaires), but also better informed and supported.

The healthcare team saves time through instant access to key information about the patient’s experience, with a view to optimizing and personalizing their care.

The choice of PROMs to be completed by the patient should be “tailored to the clinical situation and the objective being assessed,” emphasizes GAVO2. By aggregating and structuring data from multiple sources (patient records, machines, PROMs, etc.) to make it actionable, the Vestalis ecosystem aims to fuel this virtuous circle of personalized respiratory care.
