An exacerbation is a period of acute worsening of symptoms, which in the case of COPD means coughing, sputum production and respiratory discomfort [1]. This complication, which sometimes requires hospitalization, can be triggered by an infection (viral or bacterial), or by pollution and discontinuation of background treatments. A severe exacerbation with acute respiratory insufficiency is a medical emergency [2].
